Sculpture Month Houston’s curated site-specific installations tie into the accumulation of ideas currently percolating throughout the art world in such events as Documenta and the Venice Biennale. SMH participates in this dialogue by providing artists with an opportunity to be challenged to create site-specific installations in unique architectural venues.
A peek at the venues we are incorporating into our programming this year:
- SITE Gallery Houston, which is housed in the re-purposed physical structure of the old Success Rice Silos
- The 1940 Air Terminal Museum’s vintage airplane hangar at Hobby Airport
- The entry rotunda of City Hall, a historic building designed by Joseph Finger in 1938
Sculpture Month Houston (SMH) is an organization that hosts a citywide festival showcasing sculpture in various venues throughout Houston, Texas. This festival directs attention to the diverse creative energies of local, regional, national and international artists and sculptors. It joins a succession of existing art celebrations, like FotoFest, and adds to Houston’s reputation as an art-enthusiastic city.
Sculpture Month Houston was founded in 2016, by Volker Eisele and Antarctica Black (director and manager of Rudolph Blume Fine Art / ArtScan Gallery), alongside Tommy Gregory (then Director and Curator of the City of Houston’s Art Collection at the Houston Airport System), look to provide a current survey of the sculpture scene. Since that first festival in the exhibition “From Space to Field” at SITE Gallery Houston at the Silos at Sawyer Yards, SMH has evolved into a respected promoter of all things multi-dimensional.
To date more than 45 participating venues including commercial galleries, nonprofit spaces, educational facilities and museums have brought awareness to the vast array of talented installation artists and sculptors in Houston and beyond. Participating venues coordinate their own programming of three-dimensional art. Sculpture Month Houston presents its uniquely curated exhibitions—featuring a select number of artists from a wide variety of styles—in diverse venues highlighting the breadth and depth of sculpture today. Two previous successful curated exhibitions are, “Tensile Strength” (2017) and “Peak Shift” (2018).
